Hold on. That is not the whole story. I have a question. Who hasn't heard of Albert Einstein? I mean, the white hair, the genius, the theory of relativity. We've known his name since we were kids, but did you know he was married? Because I didn't. I had no idea. I never even thought about it. It was Albert Einstein, the solo genius, in my mind at least. And then I came across the name Mileva Maric. Pronounce her name again? Mileva Maric. And you know I went down the rabbit hole. And now I have a lot more questions. How many other names have we just not been taught? I'm Christy Chanel. And this is Sassy Politics. Welcome back to Sassy Politics because these headlines are about us. I'm Christy Chanel, and I want to tell you about a story that I never heard anywhere in school. Mileva Moric was born in Serbia in 1875. She was brilliant. And at a time where very few women were studying physics and mathematics, she earned a place in the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich. This was one of Europe's leading technical schools. She was the only one in Albert Einstein's physics section. And that's where they met. They were classmates. Two people studying the same impossible subjects, at least for me. Sitting in the same lectures, solving the same problems, talking about the same ideas. So they fell in love. They exchanged letters, and a lot of those letters still exist today. They talked about science. And of course, they talked about mathematics and their future. How do you pronounce the daughter's name? Before they were married, they had a daughter named Lizurl. Say that fast. Historians still don't know what happened to her, but she was freaking brilliant. The historical record just goes quiet. Later they married and had two sons. This is the part where it gets very interesting for me. In one of Einstein's letters to Mileva in 1901, he wrote about bringing our work on relative motion to a successful conclusion. I'm gonna say that again. He wrote about our work on relative motion, bringing I'ma say that again. He wrote about our work on relative motion and bringing it to a successful conclusion. Our. Not my work. Our. And you know, that one sentence has fueled more than a century of debate. Hell yeah, I would think so. Historians, some some historians, believe that she was more than Albert Einstein's wife. They believe that she could have been an intellectual collaborator during those early years with him. I mean, just put the clues together. She was educated in physics. They studied together, they exchanged ideas, and that phrase, our work, I don't know, certainly raises eyebrows. Especially mine, because I haven't gotten Botox yet. But there's always a flip side. Other historians, they don't believe it. No, absolutely not. They've looked at the surviving letters, the draft, and the scientific papers and say that there just is not enough evidence right now. Sorry, no. They argue that she was, in fact, an intellectual collaborator, but not a scientific collaborator in the way that people claim. Okay, so who do you think's right? I have no idea, and neither do they. And that's why they're still debating it over a hundred years later. But of course you're gonna get my opinion, because I'm not a journalist, and I have opinions. If two people are studying the exact same subject and they're in love, if they're spending years together, if they're literally writing letters about physics to each other and building a life together, I have a really difficult time thinking that they did not discuss and ping-pong ideas and work through different scenarios together, right? I mean, just think about your spouse. You guys work through like you got you guys talk through like everything, right? What's the difference? Except they are actually studying the same field together in the same classrooms. Like if she was a a a seamstress, maybe not, but she wasn't a seamstress. She was an intellectual companion in the same field, collaborator in the same field. Why would anyone think that she didn't contribute? Like, I'm having a hard time understanding the debate at all. How many times have you bounced things off of your partner? How many times has somebody asked a question that made you rethink where you started or your own opinion? That's what you do for each other, right? You like give the other perspective. And it and sometimes it can totally change your opinion. That's contribution also. And maybe she didn't write the actual equations. Maybe she did. We'll never know. But I think it's completely reasonable to feel like her contributions and influence were bigger than history remembers. And that's what really grabbed me. It wasn't whether we could prove whether she wrote it or not. It was the fact that I had never even heard her name. And I don't think that's fair. How did I never know about this? Like, that's the confusing part. How did I not know about her? And I'm willing, no, I know for a fact, I'm not even willing to bet, because it's a, it's a, it's a fact, that Mileva, I'm sure, isn't the only woman who's been left out of history. What were her contributions truly? Were they minimized and recognized much later? I know I've seen several movies on this. Rosalind Franklin's research was essential in understanding the structure of DNA. Lise Meitner helped explain nuclear fission. Qian Xian Wu performed one of the most important experiments in modern physics. And I know that you've seen that movie where Catherine Johnson calculated the trajectories that help send Americans into space. I know you've seen it. Great freaking movie. Today we know their names, but for many years we didn't. History isn't just about what happened, it's also about what got written down and whose letters survived, whose journals survived, diary of Anne Frank, whose work was published. And yeah, there are real debates happening over what happened in history and what belongs in the classrooms, which books should be available, how historical events should be taught. We preserve archives. These conversations matter because history helps shape how generations understand the one before it. That doesn't mean every new claim is true. It doesn't mean every old conclusion is wrong. It means keep asking questions, right? So here's my question for you. Do you think Mileva Maric contributed more than history has given her credit for?
